Madelyn vs. Madeline

Never in my life did I think I would give my son or daughter a name that could easily be mistaken for another name or easily misspelled. For example... Greg/Craig, Madelyn/Madeline. Although I love the name Madeline we went with Madelyn because Devon's (birth mom) middle name was spelled May and we liked how it flowed. Then I started thinking about it and my name alone has more spellings than any other name (in my opinion).. Megan, Meghan, Maghen, Meagan, Meaghan, Megean, Megen ... you get the point.

She got her first shots on Monday and she was a little champ. My sister-in-law asked me if I cried and I'm feeling like a bad mama cause I didn't.

Milestones

I'm realizing more and more each day that Little Miss is literally growing right before our eyes. The last few nights she's been sleeping from 9:30 to 4:30 and after she woke up this morning she rolled over for the first time, which seems a little early to me. Also, before I could get a bottle in her mouth this morning she found her thumb and it was the most endearing thing my eyes have ever seen. I was a thumb sucker for a very long time and although I won't disclose for how long, I couldn't help but be happy she will more than likely be a thumb sucker too. I wasn't expecting such milestones to occur so early and it makes me a little sad because it means with each new day she won't be a baby for long. BUT I'm thrilled we get the opportunity to experience more milestones with our little rockstar.

Her eyelashes are really coming in beautifully and I'm totally jealous.

Sunday Sledding

This past Saturday we enjoyed a day of snowfall that was magical to watch come down. It was a great excuse to stay inside and be cozy with one another, dog included because she makes a great furnace. Although it was perfect snow to go skiing we jumped on the chance to get our sleds out. I was reminded how much I do love snow and probably feel this way because this year we aren't buried under 10 feet of it. Regardless, we love the excuse to feel like kids again.

Gracie's idea of sledding was to chase or grab a hold of anyone coming down.

We're both surprised she didn't die in the process.

Learning

Parenthood is awesome. I've been hesitant to share how happy and lucky we feel because I know how beyond annoying some new parents can be. But here's the reality... I've decided I can't care what other people think because I have to document my babies life and our growth as a family.

So I thought I would share some things that I've learned in the last few weeks:

* I understand why the Lord usually provides 9 months to prepare- although I wouldn't change anything about our journey.

* Seeing Madelyn smile in the middle of the night is worth the lack of sleep.

* I should write a book about the things I learned and didn't learn while being a nanny.

*Cony and I have to consciously set time aside every day for us. It doesn't come as smoothly as it once did.

*I've gone days without washing my hair. Not a pretty picture.

* I've gone a day without brushing my teeth. Not sure how that happened.

*Finding time for the gym is near impossible unless I wait to go late at night. Thanks Johnathan and Afton for the rides!

*I'm reminded how much I want my sisters around when working on the nursery. I yearn for their input.

* My first week home without any help was a lot more challenging than I imagined. And it really has nothing to do with baby.

*One day I will hire a mommy's helper.

*I would rather have a clean kitchen than take the time to prepare a meal. I like to blame the fact we only have 28 inches of counter space.

*Running quick errands with a baby isn't possible.

*Our baby is remarkable. Period.

Christmas Recap

I can't believe it took me so long to find the time to write about Christmas, but alas a baby changes everything. I'm getting super anxious to get the nursery started and have big plans that I truly hope work out. Madelyn becomes more and more delicious everyday. She's full of smiles and happiness and brings a spirit into our home I didn't know existed. The only thing that has been surprising to me is that I haven't had the time to photograph her (shameful!)!

Christmas was amazing with my entire family in town. Having no snow was the only disappointment along with the film photos from Christmas Eve not turning out.

Today is not only my mom's 66th Birthday but Madelyn's 1 Month Birthday. Madelyn is a true delight! When she falls asleep after a feeding she's full of smiles and belly laughs. She's a happy baby and we adore her...she fits perfectly into our family.

We didn't have time to send out Christmas cards this year, but totally enjoyed getting them and hanging them in the kitchen. My entire family was in town and our first Christmas with Madelyn AND Gracie was truly magical. Can't wait to share more....

My obsession

It feels so good to be home and in our own bed, which is ironic since I hated our bed before we left. We came home late Saturday night to find our home cleaned, bedding washed, Christmas decorations mostly up, new wreaths on our doors, Ikea furniture built, dinner in our fridge, fresh brownies on the counter, table set and a lovely welcoming home sign. It was the most awesome thing two ladies could have done for us!! I've said it before and I'll say it again.... we are surrounded by the best people EVER! Both in Georgia & Connecticut.

I've been documenting our life for the last few weeks on Instagram (and have barely touched my "nice" camera) and I'm obsessed. Feel free to come follow me... mrscony.

New York, New York

We celebrated 4 years of marriage last Thursday and while mom babysat, we were able to enjoy a day at the newly renovated Atlanta Temple and eating some dessert at Cheesecake Factory. We also stopped in Anthro to buy our annual anniversary plate.

It's hard to believe we have a 3 week old but it's been such a fun experience adjusting. Except when I've been a horrible witch. But we are in fact still adjusting to it all.

Quick Like in a Hurry

I can't believe how times flies by and it's been almost a week since I last posted. Sorry for the lack of information but we have been approved by the state of Connecticut to leave South Carolina and we've been spending a few days with my mom and sister. It's been a real treat. The weather has been an amazing treat and part of me wishes Maddie didn't sleep so much so we could go on a walk... outside... in the middle of December. (It's 70 degrees outside today! CT friends, try not to be too jealous)

Madelyn still has her days and nights mixed up but I'm not going to lie, I love that Cony can get up in the middle of the night and help with the feedings. He's a champion diaper changer now too!

We also were able to spend some time with the Other Megan and she captured our new little family perfectly. I knew what I wanted and she delivered!!

The Mountain that Must Be Climbed

We've been facing a mountain of a problem this week and I'm documenting it because it's part of our journey. In adoption there is a form called ICPC (Interstate Compact on the Placement of a Child) and every state has one that needs to be approved. Since we are residences of Connecticut we have to be approved by both ICPC offices in South Carolina AND Connecticut. SC had our paperwork in court by Wednesday morning last week and approved us within hours. They sent the form off to CT by Friday morning and we were really hoping to be in Atlanta by Friday night with family but Monday morning rolls around and we are told everything is looking good, go a head a pack up! So we did.

I knew once 5:00 came around and we hadn't heard anything we weren't going anywhere. CT didn't feel they could approve us because of a few things that didn't make any sense. 1) They were concerned we didn't make enough money and didn't want us to come back to CT and get on government help (which if that was the case- we are tax paying citizens... why should it matter??). 2) They wanted to wait for the FBI clearance on Cony and only Cony. In CT it's NOT in the handbook that your have to have the clearance in hand before approval. This particularly didn't make any sense since Cony has been in the Navy and has had an FBI clearance that was more in depth. 3) They weren't sure why our agency (LDS Services) had a lawyer involved in our case. Since Madelyn was born in SC, by law in SC we have to finalize in SC and they need lawyers in order to make that happen. As of yesterday they even came up with the idea that they needed LDSS licensing in North Carolina since that's where the office is located, but it doesn't seem to matter that NC has NOTHING to do with our case.

I will say as angry and upset as we were on Monday, I've felt a wonderful peace that things would work out. We fasted on Sunday and for the first time my prayer wasn't answering immediately which leads me to believe this is happening for a reason. We clearly have something to learn. Thankfully we were able to check out of our hotel room yesterday and move our little bumms to Aiken, where my sister-in-law's parents live. They have opened their home to us and it's been a HUGE blessing. Rachel's mama cooks these amazing healthy meals and I've never been more grateful for a home-cooked meal. She also made these "to die for" cinnamon rolls. I'm hoping she'll share the recipe so I can share with you.... worth every single calorie.

Yes, this has been challenging but we figure it's just part of the process. A good friend of mine wrote me an email yesterday and she said:

"A Mother, a Father and a Baby; mmmmm, the season brings our minds to another Mother, Father and Baby who were in the same place as you.

This could be a very moving, special time with the Spirit. Hope He spends lots of time with you all and brings you comfort."

I will attest that Heavenly Father is spending lots of time with us and we are humbled by our blessings and her perspective on our situation was enlightening. I'm just grateful we have a car instead....We have felt every single prayer that has been said on our behalf regarding this situation and again, we love the people in our life!

Our Miracle

Now that Madelyn is here and we finally have internet in our hotel room I thought I'd share some details about our miracle in between feedings and muddy diapers. I'm going to try my best to do a condensed version but be prepared for a novel.

It all starts with our move to Connecticut last summer and having dinner one Sunday afternoon with our bishop's family, a family who's two youngest are adopted through the state, when a thought crossed our mind "mmm maybe that's why we moved to Connecticut... to adopt!'. Months went by and the day we were set apart as ordinance workers for the LDS Boston Temple in February we met a woman who had adopted all four of her children. I don't know if we both knew at that moment, but I knew that adoption would be in our life after talking with this woman for over an hour. We just weren't sure how or when. However, both of us did know if we began serving in the temple, we would be blessed with a child. Part of me thought it would mean we'd get pregnant. Everyone told me if we adopted or started the process we would get pregnant but that just started messing with my thought process. So I have a word of advice: don't give that counsel to anyone who is thinking about adopting and struggling with infertility. It's not very nice for various reasons.

The month of May came around and we contacted LDS Services to see what our options were and we heard back from the NYC office since CT was now in that "district". They were understaffed and wouldn't be able to help us unless we had another agency do the home-study for us. At the time that wasn't an option. So off to the state we went and thought it would work well for us, but after taking the first class Cony felt very strongly the foster system was NOT for us. I was hesitant at first because I felt if we didn't do anything- our chances of adopting or getting pregnant would cease. However, the second we made the decision not to go through the state, a weight lifted off my shoulders. This was around July/ August. So back to the doctor we went and the date was the anniversary my dad passed. The same day we were at the doctors we get a phone call from our bishop's wife asking us if we would be upset that she gave our names to a family who's daughter was considering placing her baby. Of course we didn't mind but quickly forgot about it since we didn't hear anything for weeks. Until the very last week of September when the birth mom contacted Kim (bishop's wife) and told her she was considering us but needed to talk it over with family during the weekend. The following Monday while I was buying pumpkins, Kim called us and said the birth mom had made her decision and wanted to place with us! There were so many emotions/thoughts going through our minds we were left speechless. The following week I've never made so many phone calls in my life and I hate the phone. The circumstances were still the same with LDS Services so we were on the manhunt for another agency that would be willing to do just the home-study and do it quickly. I'm not sure how many phone calls I made, but one agent was kind enough to say she was really expensive and knew someone who could probably help us. It was an answer to a prayer and we LOVE the agency she recommended. Lori with Rainbow Adoptions was exactly the person we needed to help us move forward.

At this point we still weren't 100% sure if we would be working with LDS Services at all, but we needed to attend a workshop in order to meet a training requirement they have and there just by chance happened to be one the following weekend in Boston. That was a miracle within it self because they aren't always in one location and could have been as far away as Ohio or earlier in the year. We learned so much that weekend and it was exactly what we needed to move forward with our relationship with Devon, our birth mom. That weekend was also special because we were able to get to know a birth mom who happens to be in our ward (church congregation) that had just placed her baby 8 weeks prior. Sophia's emotions were so raw and moving it lit a lightbulb in us that helped us understand the other perspective and that it was ok to show our excitement and trust Devon. The workshop was very magical not just because of the knowledge we gained but because the people we met. People who understood exactly the challenge(s) we were experiencing.

Some thing's are too special to share but after that weekend we felt very impressed to write an email to Devon and later we found out that our words were an answer to her prayer. Her parents too. That same Sunday while trying to listen in church, a name popped into my head for baby girl and I KNEW that was her name. We weren't agreeing on names up to that point but once I whispered it to Cony, he knew it was perfect too. Shortly after he checked my email to see if Devon had written back, she had and in return answered our prayers with her words and we had a moment between us that I'll never forget that was filled with tears. (Like I said, that weekend was magical.)

After that magical weekend, the race was on to get things done and ready but most importantly let Devon get to know us. Modern technology is a huge blessing in times like this and we were able to talk with her and meet her family. I need a whole other post to describe Devon and her amazingness. She is the most easy going, thoughtful, considerate person I know. Because adoption includes so many people and backgrounds, I've learned that adoption is the most beautiful thing on earth. And if you try to argue with me that it's not, I will fight you to the death. I'm 100% ok if I never get pregnant and have the opportunity to adopt all my children. It encompasses everything good in life... faith, hope, love, sacrifice, happiness and peace. Our hope in the next few months is to become huge advocates for adoption in one way or another. Please realize our silence on the good news was because we wanted to respect Devon's sacrifice and her personal journey, along with our journey.

There are many more wonderful things to share but for now, this will have to do. We seriously count ourselves the luckiest people in the world because of the people we share it with. Thank you for all your prayers and service. It means the world to us. Fairytales do exist and it's the heartache we have to experience that makes life that much sweeter. God is good. God knows us and loves us and that's the sweetest gift we have....

Jam Packed

This weekend was jam packed with events, mostly which we (the YW) were in charge of. It started with Friday night Fall Festival. Lots of people showed up with amazing soups and the kids really enjoyed the games we set up for them in different rooms. We had- Donut Strings, Mummy Wrap, Bean Bag Toss, Pumpkin Bowling and a Cupcake Walk.

We decorated the cultural hall with a "wallpaper" of crate paper in 3 different colors.

The Mummy Wrap was the biggest hit with the little kids.

And the Cupcake Walk was the biggest hit with the bigger kids. Possibly because it was dark- we only had balloons with glow sticks for lighting. I thought it was a genius idea!

Saturday I spent most of the day shopping with some girlfriends before we headed to the stake center for a youth activity. I've never had such a successful shopping trip in all my life! I feel blessed for this little gift especially because lately I don't feel like trying on anything.

Sunday we had our Young Women in Excellence Program and thought it turned out really lovely. I felt the Spirit really strongly and was a complete basket case when it was my time to talk. Hopefully the girls got the message we were trying to teach. The theme was "Your Happily Ever After" based on the talk given by President Uchtdorft.

Here's a low-down of what we did....

We had a "real-life" fairy tale table that the leaders decorated with photos, albums, dresses, and memorabilia. For the back drop Cony helped me cut out old maps so I could make a "life atlas". I should say the girls brought projects and items that represented them and displayed them on tables. From their tables we had little markings to look like a "foot trail" that lead to our "real life" fairy tale table. I wrote things like praying, scripture study, attend church meetings, etc. on the road map to represent the things that help us stay on the Lord's path.

The center pieces were decorated by a different leader that represented fairy tale characters who had big trials in their journey that lead them to their happily ever after. There was....

My favorite Alexis in the world made the cupcakes and I couldn't get over how beautiful they were. She decorated each flower in every value color- including gold!

For my dear friends who have NO idea what all this is... we have a program at church called Young Women's for the girls that are ages 12-18. Each year we do a program that highlights any projects or activities they've been involved in and help them feel Heavenly Father's love for them as His daughters. We stand and recite a theme each week that states our willingness to follow these values:

Faith

Divine Nature

Individual Worth

Knowledge

Choice & Accountability

Integrity

Good Works &

Virtue

Each value has a different color. Our hope is that the girls will carry these values with them the rest of their lives. And I can attest that these same values have helped me face certain trials in my life. I never dreamed that I would experience divorce, death or infertility. But I have and I'm stronger because of those trials.

2nd roll of Film

I finally got around to developing some rolls of film the other night and seeing what was created, warmed my heart. Every time I upload photos from my digital SLR, I'm a little heartbroken with the results. So far, film as never let me down. Except for that one time I trusted CVS to develop and they ruined both rolls with too many chemicals. Live and learn.

Saturday, 3 families let me take some photos of them on campus. I needed the practice and glad they were willing and able.

Uptown Girl

There have been many happy moments in our life in the last few weeks, I wish I could record them all. I'm sure y'all have heard that Connecticut got hit with a really bad snowstorm and some people I know just got power back yesterday! We are almost ashamed to say that we never lost power and feel very blessed. Thankfully friends came over to take advantage of our hot water and electricity! Gracie loved the snow and we're so looking forward to a wet dog in the dead of winter (please tell me you heard the sarcastic tone?).

The Fall Festival the Young Women have been planning for months was postponed for this coming Friday. However, this did not stop the sisters from dressing up in their costumes. LOVE their creativity.

For my birthday, we took the day off and drove into NYC. Yes, we drove and ended up loving the drive even with traffic. Spent the day shopping and window shopping. We spent a little time in Tiffany and Co. and it was crazy and full of people, which I didn't expect. The engagement ring floor was full of sparkly jewelry and I wanted it all. And I'm not a jewelry person.

After taking the subway down to the 9/11 Memorial and only staying for 3.5 seconds (because of the madhouse caused by the "Occupy") we took the subway back up to 102nd Street thinking that's where our dinner reservations were. Ah! More like 102 5th Avenue between 16th & 17th Street! At least we enjoyed a nice cab ride and the manager of the restaurant got us right in and we felt like royalty. We went to Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill and it was out of this world delicious. We ordered 3 appetizers to share and it was plenty of food and they were very small in size but so full of flavor we found ourselves stuffed to the brim. However, that didn't stop us from ordering dessert- Deep Dish Banana Creme Pie. Yes, it was better than it sounds!

After dinner we made our way to our show Rock of Ages. We weren't sure what to expect but the reviews all said it was awesome and we love us some 80's rock. Well, we stayed for about 20 minutes and left. We had some good seats too... but it was so vulgar we couldn't stay. The girls were in lingerie the entire time, they used the Lord's name in vain and used the F word a few times (all this in the 20 minutes we were there!). I felt so bad for Cony because he tried so hard to surprise me and we both thought we'd like the show. But I have to say, the second we walked out of that theater my heart swelled with so much gratitude that my husband was willing to walk out. I wish I could write into words how my love for him at that moment was so real, I couldn't help but shed a tear or two walking through Time Square.

I saw this and had to take a photo immediately. Way to represent in NYC, Dawgs!

Looking forward to the next few weeks spending time with family and enjoying some changes. God is good.

Cony turned the big 28 yesterday and I love that he's getting closer to his 30's. If only there was a way he could catch up to me. All he wanted was a chocolate cake and snow. He got both. He's never had a birthday with snow and I love experiencing "firsts" with him.

Our Little Haven

I realized just the other day we've been in our new place for over 5 months and although we are still trying to make it our "home", I wanted to post photos to track our progress. We really do love our home. The heat hasn't been turned on yet and we're a little chilly but plan on buying some serious flannel pj's for this winter. We do live in a hundred year old home after all, original windows and all.

These are my favorite pieces of art in our home right now. All ordered on etsy. The bee is my tribute to my dad. He was a bee-keeper, loved Georgia Tech and loved bulldogs. It makes me smile every time I look at it. The artist lives in Athens so I'm thinking there's a GaTech vs. UGA theme related to the piece. The calligraphy piece I adore. Emily did an amazing job and she's now my favorite calligrapher. And the Abraham Lincoln quote I bought not only because I think it's powerful but he's also a distant relative.

Tip of the day: It's all about putting meaningful things in your house to make it a home! Even if that means it takes months or even years to complete it. You can keep my two cents.

This pillow case was the inspiration for the room. I wanted some deep colors but keep it light and airy with a touch of traditional but whimsical all in one. It really pays to work at Pottery Barn sometimes.

I've realized a few things while taking these photos but one is... our lamp puts off a super yellow hue. And that needs to change asap.

the new love in my life

It's true. I have another love in my life besides Cony and Gracie and I haven't been this excited about anything in a really long time. Remember back about 50 posts that I wanted to go film and divorce the digital? Well after much deliberation, TIME and research, I finally ordered a new camera. I ran to Walgreen's on Saturday to get them developed and for it being the first time behind a SLR camera, I'm pleased with the results. Clearly, I still have lots to learn but I'm thrilled that the love for photography is running through my veins again.

All shot on my new Nikon F100, (Kodak Porta 400, 85 mm, f 2.8). The pretty lady is my photog friend here in CT and our husbands are also in the same department. It's a sweet deal.

If you are interested in branching out into film, I highly recommend the Film is Not Dead Guidbook. Also, I really appreciate and love when other photographers are opened and willing to share their knowledge without any hesitations. Sharon was that person for me recently and is pretty amazing!

Disturbia

The other day while working out I was listening to Rihanna's song "Disturbia" and I experienced a surreal moment. The thought crossed my mind that I would have celebrated my 11th anniversary with my ex-husband just a few weeks ago and how very different my life has turned out. That marriage was not pleasant and although I've blocked most of it out of my memory, I never forget how lucky I am that I was able to get out of that hell. Although I'm a different person now and because of that challenge/trial, I am able to appreciate Cony so much more for the man that he is and the man that he's trying to be. Is it always easy and blissful? I wish!

Last night we were both reflecting back on the 9/11 attacks and hearing stories of the few firemen & civilians that survived in the tower, helped us remember that there is a plan for everyone. Part of me would love to know about every single perspective of those who died that day and the people that were in NYC and D.C.. Maybe that's disturbing but I can't help myself. I had a dream a few years ago and it's really the only dream I've ever remembered fully. I'll spare you every detail, but in the dream I was on one of the planes that crashed into the towers. It was vivid, real and detailed. I woke up in tears and a puddle of sweat. To this day, I'm not sure why I had such a dream (and why I'm sharing it).

So although I never imagined myself living in Connecticut, married to the man of my dreams, being 30 years old with no human babies... I am living my dream I didn't know I had and I couldn't be more grateful I get that chance in life.

The weekend was a whirlwind of events, yet again. The most important that I want to document is my experience on Sunday. It was a very powerful, uplifting day and I would hate not to write down my thoughts to reflect back on them later. Young Women's (girls 12-18) was packed and we were missing half of our "regular" girls. We had new girls, first time visitors, girls who are coming back and my cup filled was overflowing. I knew in that instant that Heavenly Father was answering my prayers and fasts. In a way I never could have seen coming. This is why I have a deep testimony of fasting because my prayers are answering almost immediately and have been answered immediately in the past. Bam, just like that! I can't imagine growing up in these days with all the distractions of the world and then to have the strength to get in a car with a complete stranger, to attend a church where you know no one, takes more strength than I have in me. I admire these girls.

The weekend started off with a YW Slumber Party. We decorated cupcakes to look like a green apples and some made silhouettes for their room to pass off Personal Progress! There was also lots of eating, talking and Rapunzel. One can never really tell if the girls are having a good time but if anything- the leaders love getting together.

Fortunately and unfortunately some things got cancelled over the weekend but we still managed to host a Labor Day Bash for Cony's department. I have no idea how to entertain a bunch of Ph.D. students except by feeding them, so that's what we did. Ate.

I recently found this photo that was taken on our honeymoon in Charleston, SC and just looking at this photo- it brings back all those feelings of our first few days of husband and wife. I don't know why I never loved it (or noticed it really) in the past, but I adore it now. I adore my man. Even if I sometimes think it would be more fun to spend my money anyway I wanted to.

A Hurricane of Events

This weekend was nothing short of eventful. This is how it went....

*I went to Cape Cod for Youth Conference. It got shortened because of the storm but beautiful!
*Hurricane Irene (more like tropical storm) came and left us with no power for 48 hours. I am not complaining because a lot of our friends are still out of power and will be for another 2-3 days.

*We rented 4 movies on Saturday night thinking we wouldn't loose power until late Sunday. Only had a chance to watch one.
*Church was cancelled. So I didn't have to teach.

*Had about 12 people shower at our place. Great (and only) reason to be on city water. We never lost it.
*We bought a grill and stewed over it's $17 price tag. But it turned out to be the best $17 we've spent in a while because I've never cooked so good.
*Loved hosting friends for lunch/dinner and playing a little Rummikub!
*We had some serious cabin fever and were at each other's throats for most of one day.
*Our house almost burned to the ground once the power came back on. A burner (that we NEVER use) was turned on where my Le Crueset pot sits and turned red hot and the green beans I set out started to cook. Thankfully the paper towels that were hanging just above the burner and the paper plates that were ON the next burner didn't catch on fire.
*Gracie had lots of little kids around to love.
*First day of school was postponed a day because of power outages.

We feel super blessed our house didn't flood, a tree didn't fall on our house and we have great friends to enjoy the storm of the century with...

I'm tickled I was asked to help with this wedding. The couple was amazing to work with and I learned so much from this project.

Surprisingly we were able to get everything done for super cheap. If we didn't have it, we asked around to see who did. Thankfully we know some people who are willing to help with no complaints.

Our 5 hour Maine vacation

I honestly can't believe it's the end of August and for the last three days it's straight up felt like Fall. This past weekend we went on a mini vacation to Maine. It was supposed to be for a few days but ended up being only five hours long and more like a "staycation".

Highlights and/or Lowlights of "Staycation 2011":

*Maine is beautiful!
*Orchard Beach is an actual beach, with nice (not rocky) sand!
*Ocean water was freezing and it took us 15 minutes to finally take the dive. Apparently the water was "like a bath" warm to the natives. It hadn't been that warm in years.
*Had an awesome lobster dinner at the Lobster Shack with blueberry and whoopie pies included. The atmosphere was topnotch.
*Cony got camera happy and took some really cool photos!
*Spent an hour in Walgreen's parking lot trying to find a hotel.
*Finally booked a room.
*Got to hotel, only to find out they booked for Sunday night instead.
*Hotel did not have any rooms on Saturday.
*We drove home in the middle of the night.
*Hotel is still fighting us on giving our money back. Will never book with choicehotels.com again.
*Went to the Connecticut coast the next day and had a picnic with Gracie.
*We ate lots of great food. You know, the stuff you allow yourself to eat while on vacation.
*Went running a few times.
*Watched a few movies: Conspirator (GREAT movie!), Soul Surfer and Limitless (which should have been rated R).
*Ran into friends at the Dairy Bar.
*Gracie got sick. (and is NOT fun to clean up after)
*We determined Gracie is a cow. She eats grass and sticks.
*Got to check some things off our "to-do" list.
*We got to sleep in every morning.
*Decided I don't want to go back to work. But here I sit.
*All in all, we had an awesome "just us" weekend.

70th Anniversary, it's kinda a big deal

This past weekend, my grandparents celebrated 70 years of marriage. How many people do you know that have been married that long?? I truly wish we could have been there with them but we were busy helping with another wedding. And I don't mean with photography either. Instead I had an awesome opportunity to style a wedding and I'm thrilled with the results. Will share soon!

Going quickly

Am I the only one about to have a panic attack thinking about how soon summer is ending?? Thankfully we have a little get away planned so we can feel we enjoyed our summer. For once in my life, I'm dreading for Fall to come...because it means Winter is close behind. Until those days come, I'm enjoying beautiful days like this one...

We were dumb enough to think Gracie was ready to be left out of her crate during the day. She was fine when we had our friends drop by and let her out, but she took advantage of her freedom and ruined our new rug. Not that big of a deal but still a bummer. She's too cute to be mad at for long.

In our attempt to gain balance in our life, we clean the house together on Thursday nights. That way it doesn't have to be done on the weekends. Cony always knows how to make cleaning fun. We were listening to our wedding music on the iPad and a Johnny Cash song came on but it was my dad singing. I was trying not to be thrown off and Cony calls me into the living room with urgency. He grabs me and pulls me into his arms and we start dancing to my dads voice. (He knows how to melt my butter.) It's moments like that you don't want to forget.

Blueberries and Sunflowers

On Saturday we finally enjoyed a day doing things we wanted to and it was glorious. We picked 10 pounds of blueberries to freeze since we drink smoothies morning and night. Cony finally agreed to let me buy a Vitamix and it's changed my life. (And no, I don't exaggerate nor am I sarcastic.) Afterwards, we headed to a farm where they plant 14 acres of sunflowers each year and sell bouquets for $5 for the Make a Wish Foundation. It was a picture perfect moment.

I also have a totally random story... When mom, Emily and Jordan were in town and while we were walking on the Freedom Trail (in Boston) I saw this young gentlemen with a t-shirt on that said:

It took me by surprise because we pretty much grew up in Oakley as kids and it seriously has less than 500 people in the town and is nothing but potato farms. I don't like to claim Idaho but I did have a wonderful childhood in a town with no stop light. So of course I had to say something to this guy and come to find out he was a BYU student (duh) in Boston campaigning for Mitt Romney (even bigger duh). He didn't know who the Cranney's were but all you Idaho peeps, tell the Cranney's their t-shirts made it all the way to New England and it gave the Tompkins' something to smile about while visiting from the South.

Life right now seems to be in charge of us instead of the other way around. I'm surprised I haven't had a total mental breakdown. Oh wait. Maybe I have! It's not easy finding the balance in anything but in our attempt, we accepted an invitation to a birthday bash and found out the coast is only 32 miles from our house. People here say it's a beach, but I refuse. Because 1.) can't swim and 2.) there's more rocks than sand... but it was beautiful and relaxing and I'll take a warm sunny day at the coast anytime.

This house was the "summer home" of someone (obviously really wealthy) and the state turned into a park. In the short time we were there, we saw two wedding parties. Have I mentioned how much I love weddings?

What do y'all do to find the balance in life? Words of advice are appreciated.

A Little Vaca

Last week was full of adventure with Mom, Emily and Jordan in town. We spent time touring New England and New York City, but mostly eating. I've never eaten so much cheese and gluten or ice cream in one week! But that's what vacation is for, right?

We also spend time at the Pond Beach (aka Heaven on Earth). Cony even taught Gracie to swim but couldn't bring myself to document the sheer terror on her face.

We had a small early Birthday celebration for Jordan with our favorite red heads that included, smores...

bubbles...

pretending to be Harry Potter... and of course laughs over eating Birch Beer Floats.

Our 4th of July celebrations included the Boombox Parade in the Big Willi,

(the Boom Box Parade has no live bands so everyone carries around a radio tuned to the local radio station that plays patriotic music)

topped off with a relaxing hayride.

New York City was an adventure. Not just because it's New York City. Mom sprained her foot 3 weeks earlier and was in a boot. Walking was no option and taking subways you don't get to really see the city. So we rented a wheelchair which turned out to be great for a few reasons. 1) great work out 2) Jordan was able to stand on the back and we could move at a faster pace (he walks SO slow). Will I ever do that again? NO. Now mom, don't go thinkin' it ruined our day because it didn't.

What NYC trip isn't complete without a tour through Central Park? I really didn't get my camera out much, but we visited the Manhattan Temple and while walking on a random street ran into Alexis Bledel.

We loved walking around Boston on the Freedom Trail and taking a small break to cool off.

Today marks our one year in Connecticut. It's hard to believe. As much as I miss home, we adore our CT family. We're celebrating today by picking our real family up at the airport and spending a week rejuvenating together. I'm thrilled.

This is the narrowest home in the city. Only 10 feet wide. Apparently the owner is renting it out on a week by week basis too.

Did I mention we did this run right before the huge parade for the Bruins? If you live under a rock and didn't know the Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup, now you do. And I have to say... it was one of the coolest mad house experiences ever.

There's this awesome little Greek restaurant (if you can even call it a restaurant) on campus that is fabulous. The owner, cook, and cashier is one man and he speaks very little English. He's cute as a button and only knows how to ask for your order and say "you welcome, big pleasure!". He doesn't just say it once either. It got me thinking of all the big pleasures I have in my life.

I feel it would be a little cliche if I started by telling you about our great Father's Day so I'll begin by telling you about this awesome 5k run we did in Boston on Saturday morning. It's called the Freedom Trail Run and it's an easy run around the major land marks on the Freedom Trail and we stop every quarter mile or so, and Eddie-O shares with us interesting facts. It's by far the best $35 we've spent (in a long time) and THE best way to tour a city. I mean honestly... seeing the city first-hand, learning and exercising all at the same time = pure genius.

Father's Day was warm, sunny and beautiful. It's beyond my comprehension that it's the end of June because in the mornings I'm still wearing a little jacket and turning the heat on in the car. Seriously. Beyond my comprehension. However, we spent a beautiful afternoon together just relaxing, walking our dogchild and paying bills. Doesn't get much better than that my friends.

Gracie loves to sit on people's feet. She can find them without even looking. Just plops her little tooch down wherever she feels inclined.

I found this chick on etsy that does custom portraits for a reasonable price and thought it would make a perfect Father's Day gift. I highly recommend AshMae. She was easy to work with...and I love her whimsical (non traditional) art pieces.

I loved what she did so much I ordered an iPad sticker while they were on sale at One Kings Lane. Cony got a kick out of em'.

And finally I thought I'd share my favorite part of our new pad. The pantry/laundry room. I'm not sure what I love more about it- the built in shelves, the window or the fact that we can have a washer/dryer under our own roof again. Big pleasure!

Disconnect to Reconnect

This weekend we made a plan to disconnect from the world as much as possible to reconnect. I tell ya, a marriage is hard work. And if we aren't constantly working at it-life ain't so happy.

We spent the weekend going to a baby shower....

Going to the drive-in theater... We watched the X-Men movie and loved it. In fact, we spent most of Sunday ignoring all the housework and watching the other X-Men movies. Just finished the third one for Family Home Evening.

We even let Gracie Lou cuddle with us in our bed. She loves changing bed sheets day.

Here's the only piece of art I've hung in the house..... found the frame for $6 at an antique store. Have I mentioned how awesome antique stores are up here? Tag sales too!

And this is a sunset I was able to enjoy on a run the other night. I have to admit, this little rink-a-dink town we live in has some of the best sunsets I've seen.

A Virtuous Picnic

I'm so tickled with how last night's Young Women's Activity went I couldn't wait to share it. For those of you who may not know, every Tuesday night the Youth of our church get together and do different activities (service projects, craft projects, games, etc...something that helps lift the spirits of these young kids!) We planned it to bounce off the Sunday's lesson on Temple Marriage by getting dolled up, eating cake and having a mini photo shoot.

What's a party without an invitation?

And a cake? Don't judge me too harshly. It's been a really long time since I've had to decorate a cake in a legit manner.

4 Day Weekend

The weekend is coming to an end for us and it was a much needed break from 'having' to be somewhere or 'having' to do something. We enjoyed a little shopping, a party or two, yummy food, Redbox movies, friends, planting flowers, sewing and hanging curtains. Maybe one day soon I'll actually have our house put together to show y'all. For now just enjoy some photos of our weekend.

Cony had the grand master plan to get poison ivy on his first week on the job. But I think his bigger plan was to give it to me. Although my case is not even close as severe- I've had it longer! To help us feel better we went to the Dairy Bar on campus and it's true, ice cream does help make everything better....

Last week we had the opportunity to take the Youth from our church to a Prom. (A church prom.) Doesn't that sound like fun? We drove them in a 18 passenger van and the highlight of the night was the food. Let's just say next time we're taking a smaller car so I can keep my eyes on everyone. I do not miss being a teenager in the least. I was the girl that was uncomfortable in my own skin (until thankfully I was 17 and not longer!). Then I spent a summer in Idaho that changed me for the better.

Walmart breaks my Heart.

There are so many reasons to dislike Walmart. If the closest Target wasn't 25 miles away and gas was $4.30 a gallon- we would NEVER walk inside a Walmart. But living in the "quiet side" of Connecticut that's our best/only option 95% of the time. We walked in the other day and were greeted by this older man and it simply broke my heart. Why do these senior citizen's have to work? Much less at Walmart? I hate it. If I could I would wrap them up and bring them home with me. Also, seeing young couples shopping together with a new born and carefully looking at each item before placing into their cart makes me truly grateful for what I have in my life. Baby or no baby.

Since we've moved here there has been an outpour of love from so many individuals, couples and families that it fills my eyes with tears. When we moved into our new home, a friend Afton (don't you love her name??) came on a Friday night and helped me pack our kitchen until 11:30 at night. This is a woman who drives 45 minutes one way to take her oldest son to school. She has four kids and makes that round-trip drive twice a day and I have NEVER heard her complain once. If that were me, someone would be hearing something from me, guaranteed. While we were unpacking I found little love notes from her..

And then there's Nancy who has the most beautiful gray hair in the world. She and her husband take care of our Gracie Lou the Saturdays we are in Boston. The day we moved she cooked pulled BBQ, coleslaw, and homemade pickles for everyone that came to help. When she mentioned she was going to do it, I didn't believe her because who does that?? They have been tremendously generous to us on many different occasions. In fact, not only did they give us their dining room table and chairs, and a Bernina sewing machine- they just dropped off a car to us last night. It's a 1996 Dodge Neon and it couldn't have come at a more perfect time since I was making 3-4 trips to campus everyday for both our jobs & taking Gracie out at lunch. We are blessed beyond measure.

Speaking of being blessed, the sister missionaries have been coming to our home often for dinners and what have you and we simply love them. For me, they've been an unexpected answer to a prayer.

We have lots to catch up on besides telling you all the wonderful things people have been doing for us. Easter was fantastic! We spent it with some families in our ward and ate like a King and a Queen. Crystal who is an artist in the kitchen made this beautiful cake with dried pineapple flowers on top. I have no doubt in my mind why there's more of me to love.

I've been consumed by other responsibilities that I've been neglecting my camera. However, I had to capture Gracie's reaction when we came home with some balls for her to play with. I've decided she's not like most bulldogs. She's not lazy, she fetches and she loves to play with big sports balls. I think mom is right, dad sent her to us because for one reason she LOVES basketballs.

This pink ball lasted a total of 3 minutes. No joke.

One day soon I'll take a video of her little wiggle bum. It goes 100 miles an hour when she's excited.

Priceless.

On a baby note. I'm still struggling with ignoring the problem instead of facing it head on. I had an 'ah-ha' moment last week when I realized instead of loosing weight like the doctor said, I've been gaining weight. Subconsciously, I believe on purpose. I need to remember even if I do loose the weight and we still don't get pregnant... life will continue and one way or another, we will have children. Mother's Day is usually heart wrenching. Especially when they ask the sisters at church to stand so the men can hand out a flower (I've always hated that!). This Mother's Day was much different and not because Gracie remembered (she forgot but we won't dwell on that). I walked into church and the Rich's had bought me a corsage. I never knew until that moment that I did want to be recognized on Mother's Day. To make it even better, the Bishop (leader of church congregation) got up and read a poem. Instead of flowers, they handed out a bag of trail mix with the poem AND they didn't ask the sisters to stand. Score! Maybe next year, Cony will remember my change of heart.

Don't Stop Believin'

Journey's song is my ringtone for Cony and it's fun to see people's faces when he calls. When I call him they get to hear "Turn Around Bright Eyes." by Bonnie Tyler. Anywho, There are many things to catch up on. April was a doozy in so many ways but somehow we have managed to come into the month of May happy and stronger.

Just a few highlights:

* We moved and I can't wait to share pictures. It's a true Victorian Home built in 1905 and the owners have completely redone the place. We LOVE it.

* Cony may have lost his funding at school but he has a full time job on campus for the summer working with the grounds crew. I'm jealous he'll be outside all the time.

*Gracie is adjusting to the new place. However, we keep finding her snoozing on our bed because she can't stand the wood floors. Rugs are coming!

*I was called to be the Young Women's (girls ages 12-18)President (we plan activities and Sunday lessons) in our ward (congregation). I couldn't be more excited. I'm having a hard time finding ideas that I actually like online so I might start sharing the ones I come up with (if I'm so lucky!).

*Spring has finally sprung and campus is starting to look beautiful again.

*We still can't stand Connecticut drivers. I could write a whole post on our experiences ....

*We feel totally and completely blessed to be in love and to be able to live the life we live.

Just when...

We've been spending our days packing and driving to Boston (not everyday) and loving on Gracie. We're really excited about the house we're moving into next Saturday. We decided it wasn't the right time to purchase and as time unravels, we know why. With the move and some other things, I needed to take a leave of absence from tutoring and I already miss Valerie. However, with all the jobs and driving to Boston every weekend, I was drowning. Thankfully my job at UConn was extended through the summer! In the last few weeks we've finally gotten to a point where we feel we're settling into our little nest here in Connecticut (even when my body & mind can't handle the gloomy days). We've fallen in love with so many people and love the new house we're moving into. Just when we're breathing the school throws a bombshell on us. With all the budget cuts, they are taking away funding to new students and just informed us an hour ago that they won't have funding for 2 years. This changes everything for us. I'm hanging on to the fact I know that miracles happen and I know the Lord has His hands in this and will not (nor will He ever) leave us empty handed. Even if that means Cony is forced on the job market.

As much as I miss home, I've loved what Cony and I have become in Connecticut. Everything we've learned from being here has been for our good and for that reason alone I will always hold a special place in my heart for this state.

I want to be clear. This does not mean we are moving. Nor does it mean we are staying. We have NO clue what we're doing at the moment. If you pray and you want to mention us, we would be greatly thankful.

On a more happy note: our weekend consisted of a BBQ at Gina & Jerry's with the elders doing the cooking and Gracie getting super muddy and loving every minute of it.

She's now 35 pounds!

Today was a dream come true. We got to drive a mini-van to church filled with red headed children while their mom stayed home to take care of the youngest with a broken leg. Which meant we got to sit next to these kids during church services. If the parents would let us, we would just adopt these kids and call it a day! Apparently the kids were being so good Cony got a little bored and decided to draw me a new tattoo. I thought he was just using the top of the pen to trace the lines, so you can imagine my surprise when I took off my panty-hose.

I consider myself very fortunate to have a husband who understands that I work a lot and I need his help in the morning getting out the door. One way he helps me is by making my lunch. It's great. Some days I have no fork or spoon, the other I'll only have a bell pepper on green lettuce with a lemon to squeeze on it and some days there's so much food packed carefully in my bag, I don't know how I can possibly eat 1/3 of it. He doesn't put love notes in my bag but sometimes I'll find random items hidden. Which makes me laugh and I can't help but think that's so much better than a love note.

Family Time

Last Friday after Cony picked me up from work, we went for our first walk as a family with Gracie Lou. She behaved like a pro without the leash and we couldn't be more proud. Please don't think I haven't noticed our blog turning into the adventures of Gracie instead of our adventures in New England. We can't help it.

The walk just tuckered her out. Have we mentioned how loudly she snores??

I love color (and thankfully so does Cony!). Products showcased with a variety of color makes my heart skip a beat. I think this is why it's so hard for me to decorate my own house. There are too many wonderful options to choose from. I've always loved drawing hearts. When I doodle that's what you'll see all over my paper. Hearts and my name. I've always considered myself organized. However, lately I've recognized I am not as organized as I would like to be. If I'm organized at all. I'm telling you, we love our little apartment- the loft style and all- but it's hard to live in for various reasons. Mostly because we have one room that is the Office, Living Room, Kitchen, Dining Room, Craft Room and Pet Room. Which makes getting organized an unbeatable task. It's particularly a pain when Cony has homework to do and I can't watch TV while working on a project.

Rummikub

For Christmas we received Rummikub as a gift. Neither one of us particularly like board games, but we love this game! Most evenings consist of us listening to the MoTab (Mormon Tabernacle Choir) and playing Rummikub. No joke. Tonight we had a third player and we have reason to believe she loves it just as much as we do.

I'm not gonna lie, the last few days (possibly weeks) have been emotional. I've been trying to avoid recognizing that I'm homesick and fed up with the cold. But it's true and I feel there is no way that I can survive 4 more years here. In my effort to find solace and peace in my soul, I came across this:

My aching heart isn't just because it's cold outside and snowing and I miss Georgia like the desert misses water, it's because I have so many hopes and dreams that I get overwhelmed by feeling I need to pick just one and that I'm good enough for that one. I'm also feeling I don't belong here and have no one to relate to. But I'm better than this, I'm capable of so much more than to just feel sorry for myself.  A few things I like to do that bring me out of the depths of despair are 1.) serving someone- anyone and 2.) writing down all my blessings.

Top of the morning to ya

I feel since I have some Irish in my blood I should like Saint Patrick's Day, but I don't. There. I said it! However, I love Spring and it's coming. I feel it. We were driving to school this morning talking about how it's really strange to see grass. Not just a small patch, but a whole lawn. And the rivers and lakes are thawing! It feels like a miracle.

Also a few missing details about yesterday's "crazy lady" story. A few things that threw us off. 1.) She was dressed nicely in a beautiful purple trench coat and khakis. However, the second she started talking you could see some disturbing looking teeth. 2.)There were a few African American's sitting near by during her rant. (Also you should read Jenny's comment from that post. She explains what was going on during my memory lapse.)

President Obama wanted to see us, but we polity declined. We just didn't have the time.

It's true. I look at him and I go weak in the knees.

Even if I don't like the holiday that much...

It's Wednesday and we are still recovering from our road trip. It was a great drive, except that time it rained and Connecticut and New York do not have road reflectors and makes it VERY difficult to stay in your lane. We both love Washington D.C. and all the awesomeness it provides. We stayed with our wonderful friends Chance and Jenny who are the best hosts AND the best tour guides. We weren't able to do many touristy things but we did have an unforgettable experience in the Metro Station.

We had just picked my mom up from the Union Station and were headed to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. While we were waiting for the next train a woman came up to us while we were all in mid conversation and asked us if we thought it was weird that someone would leave their purse on a bench. The rest of the story goes something like this....

and Crazy Lady: "I just think it's weird that someone would leave their purse. Don't you think that's weird? She had things in it like she works for the CIA. I think it's strange. (pause) I think it's weird so I put the purse in a suitcase at the hotel."

Mom: "Well I've left my purse behind before, so it's not that strange."

Jenny: "I have too!"

(at this point I want to tell the lady this whole conversation was weird but I kept my mouth shut)
Crazy Lady: "You don't think it's weird? I think it's weird. She had cards and information in it from Tanzania. I think she works for the CIA."

Mom: "Sounds like she leads an interesting life!"

Crazy Lady: "You think so? I don't. I think it's a waste of time trying to educate blacks and Hispanics, especially from other countries."

(at this point I had had enough!)

Me: "Ok. That's it, you need to leave.. Now!"

She looked at me with shock.

Me: "Seriously, you need to walk away."

Crazy Lady: "You don't agree? Have you ever been to Boston, they hardly have any blacks." (hello left field!)

Me: "You. need. to. walk. away. now!"

Crazy Lady: "This is public space, I don't need to leave."

Me: "I don't care that this is public space, you are in our space and I'm asking you nicely to leave. I won't ask you again."

(if you know me well enough you can hear my tune and know that I'm asking in a very firm voice to indicate that I'm not going to put up with her crap AND I'm not afraid to do what it takes to make her leave)

At this point she stays in her spot but turns her back to us. I look at mom, Jenny and Cony and they all looked like their jaws had dropped. Mom moves to sit next to Cony and Crazy Lady thought it was her que to sit down next to Jenny. The details get a little fuzzy at this point because I was looking for a hidden camera. I think we all were. I remember Jenny turning to her and saying, "Just so you know she has a black nephew."

Crazy Ladies response: "Oh. I'm sorry."

Me: "You might want to watch what you say to complete strangers!"

Crazy Lady: "You're sounding really trashy right now."

Me: "Me?? Why? Because I'm standing up for something I believe in?"

Crazy Lady: "You must be a Democrat! Because you sound like one of those too."

(Ohhh, noo you didn't!!)

Me: "You don't know a thing about me, my family and our background. You really shouldn't talk to strangers!"

Thankfully at that exact moment the train came because my adrenaline was moving through my body and I didn't want to do something I would later regret. I am my father's daughter after all. Not nearly as much as Emily and I can only imagine how much more interesting it would been having her with us.

We're so grateful we had the chance to visit with friends and family (some that I haven't seen in 20 years!). More details to come when I upload the photos.

Also, thank you for all your sweet comments about my new haircut and sticking up for me. I will say, I don't mind Cony being honest with me and when I first got home... my hair did look a little grandma-ish.

The Floods Came Down..

I have high hopes that Spring is coming. The river touching our building is flooding over! Which means the snow is melting!! The first floor that holds storage units and offices flooded on Monday, nothing major but a good inch or so.

We're headed to D.C. this weekend for a wedding and we're really looking forward to seeing family and friends. Only sad thing is we have to board our little Gracie Lou.

Hello world. In the world of Cony and Megan, we've been busy but have had some wonderful experiences in life. We were set apart as ordinance workers in the Boston Massachusetts Temple. (And I really should learn how to spell Massachusetts without the help of spell checker).

We are thrilled to have this opportunity to serve in the temple. For my friends who don't know what an ordinance worker is or what we do in the temple, in short... it's a place where families can be sealed for eternity, one can act as a proxy to be baptized for those that are deceased that didn't have the opportunity on earth and many other sacred ordinances are performed under the proper authority. It's a place where I can feel a love for Cony that I can't feel anywhere else. It's a place where I know I can forget what's going on in the world and be at peace. It's a place where I can pray and have a better understanding about who I am and how I can inspire others around me. It's a place that helps me recognize how different principles connect into one beautiful masterpiece.

Loosing weight wasn't what I considered the best part of this, it was feeling healthy and good. Like I can suck in my stomach again, good.

I like to do a lot of thinking. This morning in the car Cony asked me "Why are you ignoring me?". Well I wasn't. I just get caught up in my thoughts and have come to the conclusion that I have ADD because of it. I've also come to the conclusion that I'm really opinionated. Not necessarily about politics or other "important" matters but things like...

1. women/girls wearing flip-flops to church
2. lack of parents disciplining children and making excuses for their kids bad behavior
3. parents getting upset about someone (mostly teachers) expecting respect from said kid and comes across as "mean"
4. screaming kids not being taken out of church services
5. furniture placement
6. a clean home
7. washing hands after using the bathroom

Some of you might be thinking, "what right does she have to have opinions about raising kids?". Well... I've worked as a nanny for 5-7 years and I've seen what works and what doesn't. I also have some amazing parents who taught me they weren't there to be my friend but to be my parent. I never understood that growing up but now I have a deep appreciation for the fact they took their role as parents seriously. It shocks me to see some parents let important principles go because "that's just the way they are" attitude. I know I'm not the only one that believes you have to train your kids, and dogs for that matter. I would go as far as saying training babies and puppies, are not much different.

See? I told you I was opinionated. I don't expect people to share these same opinions and know that most of us are just doing our best to just float. Plus- you never know ones personal struggles they may be dealing with silently. That's why I only share my opinions with few people (and now our fellow bloggers).

Cony and I are simply OVER living in our complex. We notice a lot more of the bad comings and goings now that we are outside with Gracie Lou. I feel I should know the name of all the drug dealers we see.

And we are OVER the snow and dirt. This is what we sweep up everyday in our entry.

Yesterday on our way to church, I made up my mind that I hated Connecticut (but just for the day). I'll tell you why... I had to put my make-up on in the car and it was very difficult to do so because of the stinkin' ice heaves in the road. They make for a very bumpy ride and therefor very annoying. Also, the snow is beyond disgusting. I think it's just really gross where we happen to live- it's dirty and filled with people's garbage and pet "stuff". We are both looking forward to Spring and the road cleanings!

I started my Isagenix 9-day cleanse on Thursday, and I wasn't allowed to eat anything on Saturday or Sunday except a certain drink concoction. In order to keep my mind busy and ignore the fact I was starving, I rearranged our living room. Thankfully I didn't suffer nearly as bad on Sunday because I didn't have it in me to rearrange another room. The other main reason we needed to rearrange the room was to fit the new floor lamp behind the sofa I got for a stellar deal at Pottery Barn. Clearly there's more to do to make this room pop.

We couldn't resist purchasing this adorable cupcake treat for Gracie and documenting her excitement. (This photo also goes with 'Finding the Love' challenge, Day 21: Hands) On a side note: one of the reasons I fell in love with Cony were his hands. They were clean, nicely manicured, large and tough. However, his toes (aka, Dinosaur Claws) are another story.

As I sit here at work, slightly bored and feeling gloomy my thoughts are consumed with today being dad's birthday. Instead of shopping online and filling my buggy with $1000 worth of things I NEED from Anthropologie, I thought I would write down a few things I learned from my dad...

* to love sports of all kinds and being outdoors

* to love bulldogs

* to love family

* to be honest but also except honesty out of others. His favorite phrase: "Don't pee on my head and tell me it's raining"

* to be loyal to friends, work, church and family

* to never give up

* to work hard

* how not to keep a garden

* to love the South and History (the South will rise again!)

* to expect the best from myself

* to trust my instinct (he was usually always right about everything)

There are times I'm still filled with regret about many things, but today I feel blessed that he was my dad. Also feeling blessed that Cony and I were able to reconcile our differences with his dad and we have a wonderful relationship with him. (Joining the Mormon church didn't go over too well in the beginning).

Families can be together Forever. It's a beautiful and sacred promise, that I'm grateful to know for a surety. I'm constantly baffled that I was given this life and I get to share it with the most amazing family and friends.

I wish I could say our dog is potty trained and lays on command. But this is no perfect world we live in. Cony can get super frustrated with Gracie and yesterday was no different. He had just taken her outside and while he was cleaning the kitchen, Gracie decided to pee on the carpet. To say that Cony was furious with Gracie would be a great understatement. He got so angry he went to the computer and googled 'I hate my dog'. On any other day I would not suggest such a thing, but reading stories of dogs ruining thousands of dollars worth of clothes, shoes and furniture helped my man realize how wonderful she really is. I mean, she sleeps through the night, she loves to cuddle and she sits on command 60% of the time.

I fumbled across this site yesterday and fell instantly in love. Calligraphy speaks to me and I find myself secretly doodling random words or phrases just to practice fancy penmanship. But her motto struck me and hope it strikes a cord with you too.

I never thought I would say this, but I love working in Primary. For all my non-LDS (Mormon) friends, Primary is the children's program on Sunday. I play the piano for them. I know, bless their hearts. But I've really learned to love this calling. I'm not the most experienced piano player and I mess up a lot and that really bothered me at first. I have since realized that they are just kids and they don't really care. Plus, for years now I've wanted to improve my piano playing and what better way to do it? The other thing I love about serving in Primary is.. 1) the chicks I get to hang out with and 2) Cony being in there with me. He teaches the 9-10 year olds and when I'm not playing we get to make goggly eyes at each other.

I really love our ward (congregation). There are lots of reasons why but mostly the people. Today I saw this little treat sitting on my piano and it warmed my heart. I think it's the cutest thing I've ever seen.

For some other random news we gave little Gracie her first bath.

She has gained 5 pounds in two weeks and she's learning to walk on a leash nicely and to sit and lay on command. We adore her. Except when we come home to see that she's eaten all her poop. Barf.

Haven't felt well for a few days and finally broke down and went to the doctor. I try to avoid the doctor at all cost but when ya can't breathe, it's time to go. I have a few things...

sinus infection

bronchitis

reactive airway disease (also known as R.A.D)

Now I can get out of doing things because I have RAD and I finally have a reason to use the word rad for describing myself (he he). Since moving up to Connecticut I haven't been able to breath very well. I'm thinking my lungs aren't used to the lack of 100% humidity in the air. Things like that make me miss home. Oh and let's not forget the sunshine. Not something we've seen a lot of around here. We now have a small understanding why Alaska has the highest rate for suicides. Not seeing the sun or the grass for weeks, is just down right depressing.

I was walking into work this afternoon and saw this young gentlemen walking around with shorts and sandals BUT completely bundled up on top. I wish the picture was better, but I couldn't make it obvious that I was taking a picture.... if only you could feel the cold.

On another note. We seem to see a lot of commercials up here for cruises and Florida. It's smart, because it's hooked us on the idea of going somewhere REALLY warm.

Crazy Ideas..

To say that I love getting packages or letters in the mail is an understatement. Even if I've made a purchase and I'm expecting it, the excitement is still the same. Since receiving my Christmas gift from Cony (sewing machine), my mind has been racing with all kinds of things to make. Charity sent me the best little package last week full of fabric scraps to help me with my racing mind. She also sent along a book 'Where will you be five years from today?'. She knows that I have creative desires and that I get in my own way of making things happen for myself. This has really been a wonderful little treat to read. Here are some of my favorite inserts:

This is a real struggle for me. Always has been. Probably always will be. But I'm grateful for the moments I have in my life where I remember that I'm a daughter of God and that He created me, and for that one reason alone... I should love myself and know that I can do great things.

My new BFF

Lately, I've been struggling with what I call the "mewants". You know, that phase you go through where you keep finding things you want to spend money on? I honestly don't like going through this phase. I'm not one for name brands. At all. However, Michael Khors, Coach, and Kate Spade purses have stricken a fancy with me. And even a Coach dog collar! What is wrong with me? Because I'll never own anything from any of those designers (unless I save up for a year or so..).

This evening while at work at Pottery Barn and getting ready to close everything down, the phone rang and I picked it up. I'm so glad I did, because I found a new best friend on the other side of that phone in Georgia. What are the odds that this women was looking for a particular quilt and she was given our number and I answer? We talked for 35 minutes about the weather, how she's always wanted to visit Connecticut, how she loves the beach and spends the whole summer in Florida and that she has 3 amazing children. 1 girl and twin boys born at 27 weeks, 1 twin having suffered from a stroke and now has many special needs. We also talked about her struggle for 8 years to get pregnant and 2 weeks before his delivery date lost the baby. We talked about the Lord's plan for us and miracles happening all around us. See, after loosing her baby boy, on his delivery date somehow they were able to adopt another baby boy. And they knew he was meant for them and no one else. It truly touched my heart. Most of her friends don't even know that story and she felt compelled to tell me. A complete stranger. Of course we talked about Georgia and hating the traffic. She was exactly what I didn't know I needed. We plan to keep in touch and I hope to meet this woman some day.

On my way home I was reminded that the Lord knows exactly what I need at all times. This phone call, small and simple as it was, helped me realize how incredibly ridiculous my desires have been. Is it wrong to have a Coach purse? No! But when your thoughts are consumed by materialist things, it's hard to have uplifting thoughts or desires. I'm just grateful I'm loved and Heavenly Father wants me to live up to my potential and as much as I want, that expensive purse ain't gonna help much. Yes mother- I just said the dirty word ain't. I know you're cringing.

We were convinced twice that we had a name picked out for our little pumpkin. For one Bella, but we already get enough crap about Twilight.. we didn't need to add to the fire. Another was Missi, for Mississippi because that's where Cony's from and I was already saying, "Little Miss". But we wanted something southern and dainty since she's gonna be a big, hawse like dog and is gonna need a cute name. So without further ado, we are pleased to announce her name (for the time being) as:

It's been a weekly thing to have a big storm and we get out of school and work for at least a day. This week was 2 days. The only difference in this storm was that it involved ice and rain. Super fun mix. But it's made for some beautiful scenery on campus. All the trees are glittering in the sun and I remembered to take my camera today for my lunch break. (There's another storm tomorrow AND next Thursday that apparently is going to be the worse thus far.. can't wait).

We had another snow day and will have another one tomorrow. For all of you living under a rock... we are getting a lot of snow. More than Connecticut has seen in 100 years in one month. We have been breaking records and if I'm not mistaken, under a state of emergency. They can't keep up with all the plowing that needs to be done. With all these gloomy days, we're dreaming of traveling to exotic places and eating exotic foods. We found a really cool website we wanted to share called BootsnAll where you can plan trips and flights.

Here's our trip tracker and I'd be lying if we weren't seriously considering it instead of buying a home. What would you do? Buy a home or travel the world for 2 months?

I'm calling the troops in because we need help! We thought we had agreed on a name that was perfect and adorable. However, we both agree (shocker!) that Georgia Peaches just isn't running off the tongue like it should for a dog. Maybe it had to do with the fact, I was calling her Peaches and Cony was calling her Georgia. He refuses to call her Peaches, because it reminds him of clients he used to have while working at Allstate in downtown Atlanta (and that's all I can say about it).

Here are some other options we've come up with:

Star; short for Starboard; and when we get a second dog, we'll name him/her Port.

Abby; short for Abigail; a true English name.

Dotty

This poor thing needs a name and if you feel like sharing a name... we're all ears! Shoot... I might even send you a little surprise if we use the name you give us. We've had our unborn children's names picked for years and we can't decide or agree on a name for a dog. What's wrong with this picture?

Here she is, our cute little surprise...our new Old English Bulldog. We couldn't agree on a name, so we compromised on Georgia Peaches. No, that is not a joke. She was a perfect ending to a perfect day and we are in love with her.

Here she is modeling her new Anthropologie petticoat. That's right folks. You are looking at the most stylish bulldog ever.

We've been prepping for the last 3 weeks... I've been sewing pillows and making girlie things, while Cony has been reading a 'How to Train Your Dog' book. Seem a little obsessive?

I love working for the University, because if Cony doesn't have to go to class, I don't have to go to work! Today we spent the day with some new friends from Cali at Horsebarn Hill, sledding. Cony loves it so much, he's like a kid in a candy store. It's adorable.

Warm front..

It's cold around these here parts. For example, if it gets 19 degrees it's considered a warm front. We woke up this morning to -9 degree weather.. yes, I said NEGATIVE! We still have close to 3 feet of snow on the ground and we are getting another storm on Tuesday through Thursday. We are loving it at the moment, but I have a sneaky suspicion that we'll be ready for Spring come March (possibly even next week).

I'm convinced it's not the snow on the road that causes problems. It's the piles of snow on the side of the roads because you can't see what's around the corner. Below you will see an example of how big the piles actually are...

Finished my first week of incorporating the new full time job into my schedule. So far so good. I love that Cony and I get to commute to school/work together and he can pop into my office whenever he's walking by. Because yes, I have my very own office. Door and all. Not gonna lie, it's kinda cool. I'm still tutoring 3 nights a week and working at Pottery Barn on Friday and Saturdays. I can't give up the discount. Especially if we buy a home...

That's right my friends, we have officially become house hunters. We've found a few that we are in love with and hope things work out and become home owners. Things are looking good so far, but we are keeping our guard up just in case. When I can, I'll share some photos.

Speaking of pregnancy my doctor has given me a different path he wants me to take EVERY time he calls me. It's like he can't remember who he's talking to. He informed me that I have too much testosterone and I don't ovulate. Really? I could have told you that when I was 15 and had more hair on my body then some boys. Or when I could bench press 185 when I was 16. Take your pick, because there's more to choose from. However, I really appreciate that he's helping us do all we can to get pregnant naturally before he gives me drugs. That's how I know he's the right doctor for us.
